Mary Williams Benefield (R-Decatur) - GA HD 81
Mary Williams Benefield (R-Decatur) is a first-time political candidate for Georgia State House District 81.
An eighth generation Georgian, she says that “our beloved red clay runs deeply through my veins.”
“I am a proud American Citizen, Taxpayer and Voter, that is fed up with the fact that my voice, as well as the voices of my neighbors [are] not being heard. I will represent conservative principles in Georgia House District 81,” Benefield said.
According to her Ballotpedia Candidate Connection survey, Benefield’s three key messages of her campaign are the “gafairtax", Election Integrity, and Public Safety.
Priorities that she is personally passionate about include
Fiscal Responsibility with Taxpayer funds
Accountability of Elected Officials
Election processes that are trackable, auditable and transparent.
Ensuring that policies in place benefit the Citizen and Not the Government.
Building a communication platform that enables clear exchange of ideas between Citizens and Government.
Limited Government.
Benefield recently criticized Atlanta’s largest media outlet.
“If you write for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, you might be a Presstitute,” Benefield wrote.
“Hey Stacey - if you get elected Georgia governor, are you [going to] hire 87,000 new armed Georgia Department of Revenue agents? Since you aided and abetted Biden in ushering this legislation with 97,000 new armed IRS agents. Just asking for a friend,” Benefield said.
“We have learned over the last two years how important good Judges are to our Constitutional Republic. Take the time to learn about your State Judiciary, they influence our daily lives more than politicians,” Benefield said
“Georgia schools rank 34th in the nation as reported by the AJC. It is long past time that we take a hard look at why. It looks like a good place to start,” Benefield said.
Benefield is the recipient of a certificate on Promoting Election Transparency (PET).
Tax Reform
“The Fairtax, the best option for real tax reform. A consumption tax, in which only new goods or services that people choose to purchase is taxed. Through this model, all purchases made in the State of Georgia will contribute; residents and visitors alike,” Benefield said.

Election Integrity
Among Benefield’s priorities related to Election Integrity are the following:
Clean up Voter Rolls and Voter Databases
Discontinue Dominion Voting Machines
Eliminate All Drop Boxes
return to Paper Ballots
Benefield also cites election integrity as an issue that is personally important to her.
“Election legislation is between the Legislature and the Individual Voter. Corporations, Non-Profits, Third Parties [of any kind] have no standing in determining Election Legislation,” Benefield said.
“Legislation and statutes must have clear definitions and language that is readily understood in everyday language,” she added.
The Tennessee Star previously reported that Benefield, a registered voter since 1992, was informed she had requested an absentee ballot when she attempted to cast her vote in the early voting period of the November 2020 Presidential Election.
“Please get this information out - it is very important,” Benefield said at the time.
Benefield also discovered that her address had been changed on the MyVoter page of the website of the Georgia Secretary of State.
“I had not moved, I had not changed my address. I had no knowledge that any record of mine had been altered in any way,” Benefield said.
DeKalb County is every bit as crooked as Fulton County. Are we surprised by this? No. I’m not the only one in DeKalb County this happened to,” she said to The Star News at the time.
Public Safety
“Safety is a fundamental requirement of government. Citizens have a right to expect public safety resources to be available and responsive to emergency needs,” Benefield said.
“Crime demoralizes families, communities and businesses,” she added.
Increase funding to Law Enforcement Agencies for: Wage & Benefit Increases, Advance Training & Continuing Education Courses, Equipment that is well-maintained and technologically up to date, and Properly Staffing All First Responder Departments.
Hold Prosecutors accountable to adhere to the laws of the State of Georgia and uphold their duty to prosecute criminal activity.
Support Drug & Alcohol Court Programs.
Education
“Educating our children is our first and highest priority.
“Parents and schools must work together in our public schools to create successful learning environments that achieve excellence. Academics are the road to excellence,” Benefield said.
“Legislators must ensure that oversight and accountability measueres are in place to reach this excellence,”
Audit funds from our current and past E-SPLOSTS, the CARES ACT, and all public and private grants so to identify overlapping or wasteful spending.
Expand Work-based Learning in our high schools to offer more vocational choices for students who don’t see college as a career path.
Address overcrowding of our schools by greatly restricting the use of school waivers regarding classroom size.
Utilize the Georgia Milestone Assessment System for year-end proficiency
The money must follow the child – Provide opportunities for School Choice: public or private that allows each individual child to find the best educational environment for their needs.
“Georgia kids have an uphill battle ahead of them to make up for time and opportunity lost over the last two years. It is imperative that a laser focus on academics must be the first and highest priority in the coming school year. True social justice [equals] well-educated children,” Benefield said.
Benefield will compete against Scott Holcomb (D) in the general midterm election on November 8th.
